We need aligned quality measures for all CDE UPK programs, including CSPP and TK. It really is concerning that CSPP is the only program implementing CLASS and Health and safety requirements, while TK has very few quality standards. TK teachers are also concerned with the health and safety of young 4-year-olds sharing playgrounds, bathrooms, and lunch rooms with older children. Lunch and recess are outside of “instructional time”, and there are no ratio or group size requirements during this time. Meal time scheduling is also very difficult for school sites to manage, which leaves TK students with inappropriate meal times, such as a 10am lunch for students who stay all day because that is the only time available to get them into the lunch room. These are concerns TK teachers are elevating in regard to health and safety concerns for our youngest students.
